For the third (or is it fourth) time this year, a major disaster has struck...this time in Pakistan and in the form of an earthquake. Tim Blair has the updates of casualties as they roll in
In the past hour: 30,000 dead, and, according to a government minister, the villages of Jaglari, Kufalgarh, Harigal and Baniyali completely destroyed.
In this day and age of 24 hour television news, the internet and most importantly, blogs...these disasters seem closer and closer to home each time they strike.
Last Christmas, it was the tsunami that touched many of us here, as we knew of people that experienced it and colleagues that were lost in it. Next came Katrina...and then Rita shortly after. Now this. Although in the mountains of Pakistan...and far removed from all of us, with the news medium as it exists today, wed learn of it quickly and we learn of the devistation thoroughly.
I know we have been giving quite a bit recently...but, it's time to maybe think about giving again. This time, choose your international agency of choice. Lutheran World Relief did quite well for the tsunami...they are a good choice.
