German Fans Expecting Rout of U.S.
BOCHUM, Germany - Germany's national soccer team has been treated like a pinata since it lost to Italy 4-1, and now fans are expecting — perhaps demanding — an ego-boosting rout of the United States on Wednesday.
Eleven players on the somewhat depleted American roster started practice Sunday at Lohrheidestadion in suburban Wattenscheid, in a valley overlooked by a coal mine. Seven more are due to join Monday, when Germany starts training in Duesseldorf.
Things favoring a German win
- The game is in Germany
- The USA is without many of its top players due to injury or club teams not letting them go for this match.
Things favoring a USA win
- The latest FIFA rankings places the USA 5th...Germany 22nd. A German win would certainly be an upset.
- Their coach is an American!
Germany coach Juergen Klinsmann, a member of his nation's last World Cup championship team in 1990, has been criticized for everything from his team's play to his decision to commute to Germany from his home in Huntington Beach, Calif.
OK...so maybe he isn't American, but why doesn't he want to live in Germany? Huntington Beach is a nice place...I'd live there too if I could afford it.
