OK...so, maybe I am just a spoiled international traveller, but I got a bone to pick with NW Airlines. I've checked in and am waiting for my flight with NW. I am checked in to first class...but, the lounge in PDX will not accept me, as they only have lounges for International travellers. Uhhhhh...OK, so I have paid how much more for this ticket, and they won't let me go in to enjoy the benefits that befit that sort of price?
I'm currently using the Wi-Fi in the Widmer Pub in the terminal. Got a pint of Drop Top Ale...and actually am having a decent time of it. BUT...I have to listen to the knuckleheads conversation next to me (which I have headphones and music turned up quite loud and I can STILL hear them. I don't CARE about your new house and what your sister's mother in law thinks of it!!!) and I have to pay for the beer.
Travelling on American airlines is more like travelling by bus. They rattle you through the security check-points and then any sort of service they might offer is not for you, especially if you pay the highest prices on the aircraft. Oh yeah...and lets not even get into the food and in-flight service.
Remember, if travelling NWA...don't bother with the first class tickets, you get nothing from it, except a bigger seat and the same old service.
Sad, isn't it? When I was a kid, taking an airplane was a special day. Mom bought us a nice outfit, we dressed up and remained on our best behavior, and the employees working on the plane considered themselves "hosts" and "hostesses" charged with creating a pleasurable experience.
Blame deregulation, my friend. Price competition may have made air travel cheaper, but it made the experience feel cheap, too.

I blame the unions. They inflated the salaries of these folks, and then when the industry couldn't handle it anymore, and these people began to take pay cuts...the incentive for doing an exceptional job flew out the window.
On my way home...that is the good part.

Just flew back from the States with the family on United, JFK-SFO-Nagoya-Tapei, suprisingly no problems at all, guess we got lucky, it also helps I guess that myself and the wife refuse to take any kind of shit from airline staff whoever they think they are.
