The last time we talked about Stevo's hero, she was finished with chemo and radiation treatments and was declared cancer-free. She went home...then had a long, grand Christmas holiday with the family.
Now, she is back in NYC for an extended procedure. It's high tech. It's incredibly complicated. But, there is nothing to lose in this procedure...only things to gain. As Stevo put it, doctors will inject her with anti-bodies that will have radiation attached to them. These anti-bodies serve as delivery carries to each of the cancer cells possibly hiding in her body. The delivery boy knocks on the door, 'Candygram for Mongo," it drops off the tasty treat of a radioactive sandwich and...boom. Dead cancer cell.
But first, she will undergo a procedure to add an on/off switch to a drain that has been inserted from her brain to her stomach. This was done before her chemo treatments to ensure any fluid on the brain was draining properly. Doctors will use this same system, but they need to shut it off for periods of time, in order the anti-bodies can enter the brain and stay there for a bit.
Like I said...this is all really out there...but really cool when you think about it. There are loads of people out there thinking of this stuff in order to save you and me...and little girls too.
All told, the procedures should take a month or so, as there is a waiting period between doses...so, we will know more as time rolls along. Stay tuned for updates.
UPDATE: Just in from Stevo:
She's a little sore after the surgery but the doc was pleased with how it went, also had CT scan to make sure the switch was doing it's job and looks okay, both of them totally knackered
