I Won!

Venomous Kate holds her weekly caption contest and I won!  I don't usually participate, because I get in late and what usually inspires me has already inspired someone else by that point.  But, this time, I got in early and took home the prize...which was...ehhh...nothing.

That Canuck Music Contest...again

Alright...I have complained in the past about the quality of music I hear playing at the games during radio and television broadcasts.  I have never been to a Canuck game...a sad testament to this hockey fan...but, I do have my opinion about what should be the 'experience' of attending a game.

Actually, if I were running the show, I would probably get rid of the recorded music that is played during timeouts and the like during the course of the three 20 minute periods.  The world loves 'retro' and people always are looking for that experience that their parents and grandparents had when attending a game.  The sights, smells and sounds of those times elicit great memories in everyone and nothing more than the tried and true arena organ.  There is nothing like the charge chant pumped through the pedals and keys of an organ in an arena.  After all, churches have pipe organs, correct?  And what is the arena, but the church of hockey.  Bow your heads and remove your hats.

But...if today's crowd insists upon recorded music during the game, it should be the duty of the game DJ to mix it up.  Instead of coming up with a playlist for the entire year(s), why not continually seek to the best music for the moment and play them when needed?  It's those special times when you heard that song played during that play, that you will remember it always...

The current list of songs the Canucks have are just...brutal.  Old...tired...over played.  There are some great classic songs out there that are not overplayed nearly as much as the list they have in place.  And, again, it is the duty of the DJ to ensure people are not bored and tired of the music, or the entertainment experience they expect in the arena.  A failure to deliver, is a failure of the DJ at that time.

Unfortunately, I don't do the iTunes thing, so I cannot enter the contest.  But, if I were to enter the contest, here is what I would throw at the fans in GM Place for the first go round...and then, continually updating and revising the song list as I went through the season.

That's it...if I were to step into the booth today, this is what I would start with.  Not everyone's cup of tea, I am sure...this is why no one 'playlist' is ever the best.

Random Blog Post

It's been slim pick en's with blogging lately.  I find I haven't had too much to write about much of anything.  Life has slowly slipped into a routine of sorts...and my attention has been focused on other things...

  • The convergence of football, hockey and baseball seasons have been occupying time.  I've been trying to scour the internet for games that are worth watching the past couple weeks and then, finding the time to watch them has been a challenge as well.  Last week I had about 4 games to watch...this week maybe 2 or 3.  I don't get any baseball games, so I am relying on game updates and internet scores.  With the installation of satellite TV this weekend in the house, we at least get ESPN and they show games now and then.  But, ESPN Asia may as well be re-names ESPN Bronx...because all they friggin show are the Yank(m)ee's.  Ughghgh.  Finally, the Canucks have started camp and pre-season games and I finally got my first game to watch this morning.  Just too many things right now to keep things rolling.
  • I started up on the Weight Watchers thing...and it takes some of my time to load in the points and stuff online.  Also, I find myself trying to kick the habit of snacking much more than I thought.  I munch a lot...and I get the munchies all the time.  I need to get beyond that.  Started back up on the treadmill this weekend...so, more and more of that, which takes me away even more from the keyboard.
  • Observation:  Expat Son has started school and every morning he awakes and goes into the shower and brushes his teeth...without prompting.  Then, puts on his shirt and tie for the day.  We all grow up a bit...and he has done a bit of personal growth since starting school.  I have to say, if this sense of responsibility is what the British school system gives kids, switch the entire American system to this, now!
  • Bought a load of new music on the independent CD Baby.  Simple...pay for the music, they give you a permanent link to download your music.  All the files are downloaded in a simple ZIP file, are in *.mp3 format and they are DRM free.  You can do what you want with the files.  Beautiful.  Here is what I got:
    • O'Bryan; F1rst.  This is sort of a step back to the early 80's in terms of sound and style.  Very soulful and provocative songs with that sound and feel from so many years ago.  To me, this is what R&B is supposed to be.
    • Nadir: Distorted Soul 2.0  Same as above...but the sound is Funk.  Nadir has an incredible voice for this type of music.  I have always lamented the coming of rap, hip-hop; but this albums combines some elements of those, but packaged in a funk beat and sound.  Fantastic.
    • Delp & Goudreau, RTZ: Lost and Found in America.  Loads of music done by recent suicidal lead singer of Boston and Barry Goudreau, original lead guitarist for Boston.  The duo always worked together through the years and this collection of CD's is just a load of all that work they did together through the 90's.  RTZ is what Boston could have become, had they not been saddled with the numerous lawsuits.
    • The Thieves: Tales from the White Line & Where the Bright Lights Bloom.  A hard edge rock and roll band who recently announced their disbandment.  Too bad, they had some real kick ass music.  Thanks to Insomnia Radio for introducing me.
    • Pensive:  Artifacts.  This San Diego band has kicked around for some time, but has just released an EP and I really like this sound.  Not sure how you would label them...alternative...rock?  I don't like the labels...lets just say they play rock and roll, so give them a listen.  Another Insomnia Radio find..
  • Work has slowed to a crawl as we approach China National Day holiday....boring!
