Alright...I have complained in the past about the quality of music I hear playing at the games during radio and television broadcasts. I have never been to a Canuck game...a sad testament to this hockey fan...but, I do have my opinion about what should be the 'experience' of attending a game.
Actually, if I were running the show, I would probably get rid of the recorded music that is played during timeouts and the like during the course of the three 20 minute periods. The world loves 'retro' and people always are looking for that experience that their parents and grandparents had when attending a game. The sights, smells and sounds of those times elicit great memories in everyone and nothing more than the tried and true arena organ. There is nothing like the charge chant pumped through the pedals and keys of an organ in an arena. After all, churches have pipe organs, correct? And what is the arena, but the church of hockey. Bow your heads and remove your hats.
But...if today's crowd insists upon recorded music during the game, it should be the duty of the game DJ to mix it up. Instead of coming up with a playlist for the entire year(s), why not continually seek to the best music for the moment and play them when needed? It's those special times when you heard that song played during that play, that you will remember it always...
The current list of songs the Canucks have are just...brutal. Old...tired...over played. There are some great classic songs out there that are not overplayed nearly as much as the list they have in place. And, again, it is the duty of the DJ to ensure people are not bored and tired of the music, or the entertainment experience they expect in the arena. A failure to deliver, is a failure of the DJ at that time.
Unfortunately, I don't do the iTunes thing, so I cannot enter the contest. But, if I were to enter the contest, here is what I would throw at the fans in GM Place for the first go round...and then, continually updating and revising the song list as I went through the season.
- Introduction of Players to the Ice:
- Robbie Williams - Let Me Entertain You
- Eric Gales - That's What I Am
- Penalties
- Paramore - Here We Go Again
- Hoobastank - Born to Lead
- Mae - Suspension
- Bowling For Soup - Somebody Get My Mom
- Fighting
- OK Go - Invincible
- No Doubt - Just A Girl
- Bowling For Soup - I Ran (cover of the Flock of Seagulls classic)
- Cream - Anyone For Tennis
- Exies - Splinter
- Breaks in the Action
- The Comfies - Your Sunshine
- Yellowcard - Lights & Sounds
- Pensive - Live Fast
- Keane - Is It Any Wonder
- Cage 9 - Hollywood Car Crash (nice suggestion, John)
- Classics to play at breaks in the action
- The Champs - Tequila
- The Isley Brothers - Shout
- Various Artists - Louie, Louie (so many versions of this song, one could have fun with this, especially with Luongo in goal)
- Star Wars - Imperial Death March
- Oasis - Wonderwall
- Frank Sinatra - Strangers In The Night (This or any multitude of other songs by Frank)
- David Bowie - Fame
- Of Course...something from the Zamboni's
- Hockey Monkey
- The Goalie is Drunk
- Referee's Daughter
- End of Game
- Hellogoodbye - Here (In Your Arms)
- John Mayer - Wait Until Tomorrow (cover of the Jimi Hendrix classic)
That's it...if I were to step into the booth today, this is what I would start with. Not everyone's cup of tea, I am sure...this is why no one 'playlist' is ever the best.
Good list! I have taught you well (older?) grasshopper. I would add 'Wolf in Sheep's Clothing' by This Providence in the fighting category.
